Spelling Race — Letter Tiles and Word Stands

A fast word game. Each player takes a stand and a set of letter tiles, and races to build valid English words from the letters they have before the other players finish or the time runs out. The pressure is what makes it work — it pulls words a child already knows into active use.

How you play

1. Give each player a stand and a set of letters.
2. Start together and build a word from the letters you hold.
3. Stack finished words on your stand.
4. Keep building until time runs out or someone finishes.
5. Count the valid words each player made.

What it builds

• Spelling under pressure, which is where recall actually gets tested
• Scanning your own letters for possibilities rather than one fixed word
• Vocabulary in active use, not recognition
• Playing fast without abandoning accuracy

Three ways to play it

• Allow two-letter words for a younger player to even it up
• Play cooperatively — build the longest single word together
• Keep the words made and re-read them at the end of the game
