Description
A wooden board with holes through it and coloured elastic cords threaded into a deliberate tangle. The task is to work every cord free without pulling it tighter. Rushing makes it worse, which is the lesson the puzzle teaches by itself.
How you play
- Study the tangle before touching anything and see how the cords cross.
- Decide which cord looks least trapped and start there.
- Work it back through the holes slowly, in the order it went in.
- If a cord tightens, stop and undo the last move.
- Carry on until every cord is free of the board.
What it builds
- Working out an order — some cords cannot come out until others do
- Slowing down deliberately, since force makes it worse
- Fine hand control threading cords through holes
- Reversing a wrong move instead of forcing through it
Three ways to play it
- Undo it once, then re-thread it and give it to someone else
- Talk through the plan before starting
- Photograph the tangle first so you can set it up again
The details
- Ages: 3–6 years
- Material: wood
