Rope Untangle Puzzle — Free the Cords from the Board

A wooden board with holes through it and coloured elastic cords threaded into a deliberate tangle. The task is to work every cord free without pulling it tighter. Rushing makes it worse, which is the lesson the puzzle teaches by itself.

How you play

1. Study the tangle before touching anything and see how the cords cross.
2. Decide which cord looks least trapped and start there.
3. Work it back through the holes slowly, in the order it went in.
4. If a cord tightens, stop and undo the last move.
5. Carry on until every cord is free of the board.

What it builds

• Working out an order — some cords cannot come out until others do
• Slowing down deliberately, since force makes it worse
• Fine hand control threading cords through holes
• Reversing a wrong move instead of forcing through it

Three ways to play it

• Undo it once, then re-thread it and give it to someone else
• Talk through the plan before starting
• Photograph the tangle first so you can set it up again
