Puzzles

Choose a children's puzzle by the set, not a fixed age-to-piece rule

A piece count tells you how many pieces are in the box; the picture, piece size and your child's experience also matter. Check the exact set's listed age and package warnings. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends reading toy age and warning labels.

Available ways to start and step up

• Short picture puzzle: My First Puzzle: Household Objects has 20 pieces and is listed for ages 3–6. The Giza Pyramids mini puzzle has 24 pieces and is listed for ages 3–5. The 24-piece starting guide shows how to begin together.
• Build on the floor: the Giant Butterfly Floor Puzzle has 52 pieces and is listed for ages 4–6. Its floor format gives a child room to spread the pieces out.
• Longer picture challenge: the Space Exploration Jigsaw has 180 pieces and is listed for ages 3–5. Consider it after easier puzzles if your child wants a longer build; the age label alone does not make 180 pieces a first puzzle.
• Colour and assemble: the Under the Sea Colour-In Jigsaw has 500 pieces and is listed for ages 8–10.

For fitting shapes into a board or following a maze, browse wooden puzzles. The Giza set's parent guide gives exact contents and a play progression. Current stock and prices appear on each product page.
