Description
Four solid figures showing a monarch butterfly at each stage of its life — egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and adult. They are painted to match the real thing, so a child can hold each stage and see how one becomes the next. They belong to the Montessori idea of learning from a real object rather than a picture.

Parent guides: Easy Science Experiments for Kids at Home: Step by Step, by Age · Games That Build Your Child’s Skills, by Age: 1, 18 Months, 2, 3, 4–5 and 6+
How you play
- Lay the four figures out in a row, mixed up.
- Ask your child which one comes first.
- Put them in order: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly.
- Talk through what changes at each step.
- Mix them up again and let your child order them alone.
What it builds
- Sequencing — putting stages in the order they actually happen
- The idea that a living thing changes form as it grows
- Vocabulary for each stage, learned while holding the object
- Close looking, since the figures carry real detail
Three ways to play it
- Match the figures to a butterfly you see outside
- Hide one stage and ask which is missing
- Line them up beside the frog set and compare the two life cycles
