Description
An electronic card reader shaped as a cat, with a large deck of picture cards. Your child slides a card through the slot and the device says the word aloud. Hearing a word spoken correctly, on demand and as often as they like, is what makes this work where a picture book does not.
The details
- Ages: 3–5 years
- Material: plastic
Parent guides: How to Help Your Child Talk: Play Ideas by Age, Speech Toys, and When to Ask for Help · How to Teach Your Child English at Home: Letters, Words and Songs, by Age
How you play
- Switch the reader on and pick a card.
- Slide the card through the slot.
- Listen to the word being spoken.
- Look at the picture and repeat the word aloud.
- Slide it through again as many times as your child wants.
What it builds
- Pronunciation, heard correctly every time and repeatable on demand
- Vocabulary across a large deck of cards
- Independence, since a child can use it without an adult reading
- Hand control, sliding a card cleanly through a slot
Three ways to play it
- Do a small stack each day rather than the whole deck
- Say the word yourself before the machine does and compare
- Sort the cards your child knows from the ones they do not
