How to choose building blocks

Start with the exact set's age label and pieces. A child who enjoys building a scene may prefer loose wooden blocks; one who wants moving parts may enjoy gears. For help choosing age-labeled toys, see the American Academy of Pediatrics' toy buying advice.

Compare the kind of build

• Large pieces and wheels: car building blocks are listed for ages 1–3. The chassis has working wheels; check the product and package before offering it to a younger child.

What about magnetic building sets?

Kiddil also lists 52-piece magnetic rods and balls and a 58-piece rods, balls and panels set. Check each package's age label, warnings and magnet containment before choosing one; do not treat an easy connection as proof it is right for a younger child. Stop using a set if a magnet becomes loose or a piece breaks. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission explains the serious risk from swallowed magnets. Keep magnetic pieces away from younger siblings and seek urgent medical help if a child may have swallowed a magnet.
