Description
A word game built around reading and spelling, played with other people rather than alone. Working out words in company is what makes it stick — a child will attempt a word in a game that they would leave alone on a worksheet.
The details
- Ages: 3–8 years
Parent guides: How to Help Your Child Talk: Play Ideas by Age, Speech Toys, and When to Ask for Help · How to Teach Your Child English at Home: Letters, Words and Songs, by Age
How you play
- Set the game out where everyone can reach it.
- Take turns, giving each player their own go at a word.
- Say the word aloud as well as spelling it out.
- Help rather than correct when someone gets stuck.
- Play a short round rather than a long one, and play often.
What it builds
- Spelling attempted out loud, where a mistake is cheap
- Reading vocabulary, used rather than memorised
- Turn taking and playing alongside others
- Confidence with words, which is most of what early literacy needs
Three ways to play it
- Play short and often rather than one long session
- Let your child be the one who checks the words
- Keep the words that came up and revisit them the next day
