Sight Words Swat — English Word Race with Swatters

Fly-shaped cards printed with common English sight words, and a swatter for each player. Someone calls a word and everyone races to swat the right card first. Whoever hits it keeps the card, and the biggest pile wins.

How you play

1. Spread all the word cards face up on a table.
2. Give each player a swatter.
3. One person calls out a word.
4. The players race to swat the card carrying that word.
5. Whoever hits it first keeps the card; most cards at the end wins.

What it builds

• Recognising common English words on sight, which is how fluent reading works
• Fast visual scanning across many similar-looking cards
• Playing to a rule under pressure, including losing a round
• Vocabulary, reinforced by every round played

Three ways to play it

• Start with ten cards rather than the whole set
• Read the word after swatting it, so it is said as well as seen
• Let the caller be a player too, on the next word
