Wooden Stick Layering Puzzle — Over and Under Challenge

A set of brightly coloured wooden sticks and round pieces, with challenge cards showing them crossed over one another in a tangle. The puzzle is not just where each stick goes but which one lies on top — your child has to read the layers and rebuild them in the right order.

How you play

1. Draw a challenge card and look at the pattern on it.
2. Work out which stick is underneath and which one crosses over it.
3. Start with the bottom layer and lay those sticks down first.
4. Add each layer on top in order, placing the coloured rounds where the card shows.
5. Compare your build with the card and fix anything sitting the wrong way round.

What it builds

• Spatial reasoning — over, under and crossing, which is harder than it looks
• Working out where to start so the build does not have to be undone
• Patience and a steady hand while placing on top of what is already there
• Close reading of a picture for detail rather than a glance

Three ways to play it

• Build a pattern yourself and let your child copy it without a card
• Take a photo of a finished pattern and use it as a new challenge later
• Start with cards that have only two layers before moving to the tangled ones
