Interlocking Shapes Puzzle — Fill the Board, No Gaps

A board and a set of interlocking coloured pieces in different shapes, with a booklet of challenges. Each challenge fixes a few pieces in place, and your child has to fit all the rest around them leaving no empty space. Pieces can be turned and flipped, which is where the difficulty lives.

How you play

1. Pick a challenge from the booklet.
2. Place the pieces the challenge fixes in position first.
3. Take the remaining pieces and work out how they fit around them.
4. Turn and flip pieces in different directions to find the fit.
5. The challenge is complete when the board is full with no gaps.

What it builds

• Fitting shapes into a fixed area with no room for error
• Rotating and flipping a shape in the head before the hand moves
• Working from constraints — the fixed pieces tell you what is possible
• Persistence, since a near-solution has to be pulled apart

Three ways to play it

• Start with the challenges that fix the most pieces — they are easiest
• Solve one, then try to find a second arrangement
• Come back to one that beat you rather than checking the answer
