Description
A set of solid figures showing a frog at each stage of its life, from egg through tadpole to adult. Each stage is a separate piece your child can pick up and look at closely, which makes the change from one form to the next far easier to grasp than a diagram in a book.
The details
- Ages: 3–6 years
Parent guides: Easy Science Experiments for Kids at Home: Step by Step, by Age · Games That Build Your Child’s Skills, by Age: 1, 18 Months, 2, 3, 4–5 and 6+
How you play
- Lay the figures out mixed up.
- Ask your child which stage comes first.
- Put them in order, from egg to grown frog.
- Talk about what changes between each one — the legs, the tail, where it lives.
- Mix them up and let your child order them alone.
What it builds
- Sequencing a real process in the order it happens
- The idea that an animal can change shape completely as it grows
- Vocabulary for each stage, attached to an object rather than a word list
- Careful observation of what differs between two stages
Three ways to play it
- Compare with the butterfly set — both change, but in different ways
- Hide one stage and ask which is missing
- Draw each stage after handling it, so the looking gets recorded
