Problem Solving and Logic Toys
Toys where the answer is not on the box. Sliding puzzles, logic boards, single-player challenge decks and strategy games — each one sets a problem the child has to take apart before they can solve it. Trial and error is the point, not a failure of the toy.
Sorted so a five-year-old and a ten-year-old both find something at the edge of what they can already do.
