Description
A set of pieces in geometric shapes — star, triangle, circle and more — that a child draws around to build pictures. It bridges two things that usually stay separate: naming shapes, and using them to make something.
The details
- Ages: 3–6 years
Parent guides: Games That Build Your Child’s Skills, by Age: 1, 18 Months, 2, 3, 4–5 and 6+ · Kids' Gift Ideas by Age: Birthday Presents From Baby to 10+
How you play
- Spread the shapes out and name the ones your child knows.
- Hold one down firmly on the paper.
- Draw around its edge with a pencil.
- Move it, or pick another shape, and draw around that too.
- Turn the outlines into a picture — a house, a face, a rocket.
What it builds
- Shape names, learned while drawing rather than reciting
- Pencil control around an edge, which is real handwriting practice
- Holding one hand steady while the other works
- Seeing that a picture can be made from shapes rather than freehand
Three ways to play it
- Draw around the same shape repeatedly to make a pattern
- Overlap two shapes and colour only where they cross
- Draw a shape, then find something in the room that matches it
