Triangle Tangram Puzzle — Picture Challenge Cards

A set of coloured triangles and a deck of challenge cards showing pictures made from them — houses, fish, rockets and abstract patterns. The difficulty is not finding the right triangle but setting it at the right angle: the same piece looks completely different lying on its side.

How you play

1. Draw a challenge card and look at the picture on it.
2. Find the triangles that match it in colour and size.
3. Turn each one until its angle matches the card.
4. Lay them down side by side until the picture is complete.
5. Check your version against the card and rotate anything that is off.

What it builds

• Rotating a shape in the head before moving it with the hand
• Noticing angle, not just shape and colour
• Accurate placing, since a triangle slightly turned spoils the picture
• Reading a picture as a set of separate parts

Three ways to play it

• Give the same card to two people and compare the finished pictures
• Build a picture and ask your child to name what it is
• Turn a card upside down and try to build it that way
