Description

A race for two players on a shared grid. Each player takes a colour of balls and both start at once, setting their balls into the grid to build the shape shown on the challenge card. The balls go straight into position rather than being thrown. The first to finish hits the lever at the side, which flips the board and clears their opponent's work.

How you play

  1. Turn over a challenge card so both players can see the shape.
  2. Each player takes one colour of balls.
  3. Start together and place your balls into the grid to build the shape.
  4. Press the lever the moment your shape is complete.
  5. Play several rounds and count who won most.

What it builds

  • Reading a pattern under time pressure, holding the shape in mind while placing
  • Working out an order to place in, rather than filling at random
  • Losing and going again, which a short round makes easy to shrug off
  • Speed and accuracy in seating each ball

Three ways to play it

  • Play without the lever at first, so a younger child can finish at their own pace
  • Deal two cards and let each player choose which shape to build
  • Play in pairs — one calls the next position, the other places the ball

The details

  • Ages: 3–8 years
