Description
Colour-coded word cards where each colour is a part of speech — noun, verb, adjective. Your child slots them into a board to build a grammatically correct sentence, and because the words are drawn at random the result is usually absurd. Grammar is learned because the joke depends on it.
The details
- Ages: 3–8 years
Parent guides: How to Help Your Child Talk: Play Ideas by Age, Speech Toys, and When to Ask for Help · How to Teach Your Child English at Home: Letters, Words and Songs, by Age
How you play
- Take cards from the different colours — a noun, a verb, an adjective.
- Slot them into their places on the board.
- Read the sentence you have built out loud.
- Laugh at it, then swap one card and read it again.
- Move up a level and add more words to the sentence.
What it builds
- Sentence structure — which kind of word goes where
- Parts of speech, learned by colour before they are learned by name
- Reading aloud, with a reward at the end of every sentence
- Understanding that a sentence can be correct and still be nonsense
Three ways to play it
- Swap only the adjective and see how much the sentence changes
- Build a sentence that is true, which is harder than it sounds
- Let your child build one for you to read
